Twic Card

The TWIC card is issued in support of security. Represents an identification card of a transport employee. It is embedded in the program by the US Department of Defense and Coast Guard. The aim is to maximize control over the access of marine personnel to protected areas and certain facilities. In short, this specific TWIC card access procedure is focused on preventing terrorist activities and other threatening events at all ports.

The card has an integrated chip for storing certain information about the holder. It is read when placed in a reader or when approaching a «contactless» reader. It also contains a magnetic strip, similar to a credit card with a digital barcode on the back. There is also a fingerprint of the holder for even greater security.

To become a TWIC cardholder, one person must go through a complete screening process. This makes the identification of the worker very easy. Only after the completion of the whole procedure, maritime workers have the right of access to the protected areas of the maritime transport system.

Why is a TWIC card required?

  • The main reason for owning such a card is the identification of an authorized person to access secure areas of maritime transport
  • System availability of TWIC card may prevent access of unauthorized persons to the places of ports should remain under secure supervision
  • Easy cancellation permit access to the maritime transportation system to persons who show that they are able to perform similar duties

Normally cardholders are those who fulfill the conditions for its issuance row Administration Transportation Security (TSA). These include the Coast Guard with a certificate that includes the seafarer’s trader, long-distance employees, truck driver, port facility employee and any other person in need, according to MTSA regulations. Many car companies also require drivers to have such a card, and R and L carriers require their employees to receive cargo from ports.

Reason for renewal of a Twic Card for de-qualification

Once a TWIC card has been issued, it must be renewed periodically – every 5 years. There are various reasons why its holder may be disqualified. Most often in sentencing because of some crimes, such as:

  • Espionage
  • Improper transportation of hazardous materials
  • Riots
  • Treason
  • Terrorism
  • Penetration in transportation security, which proved to be a result of an intentional crime
  • Various illegal acts by threats of bombs or explosives, murder or any other similar attempt

Another reason for a TWIC card refused

In addition to all of the above, there is a possibility of disqualification in the TWIC card application for some time. If a person has committed a crime in the last seven years, it is a sure sign of a card refusal. Storr may be of any nature:

  • Extortion
  • Bribery
  • Firearm
  • Fraud
  • Arson
  • Rape
  • Kidnapping
  • Smuggling
  • Selling drugs
  • Entry into seaport without permission, and other

How to get a TWIC card?

Obtaining a TWIC card is a long and time-consuming process, so if you need it, start the application process early. It may be about two to three months before you take any job that is required.

You need to get started by going through some basic requirements:

  • Applying – you probably think it’s easy. In fact, sometimes it can be a rather cumbersome process. An application form is submitted initially online or locally. In this way, the person confirms his identity and awaits approval. An appeal may be lodged in the event of rejection. The application is filed with the Transportation and Security Administration (TSA)
  • Checking the conditions for issuing a TWIC card – one of the most important conditions is that you do not have any crimes in the past. In addition, you must have a clear reason for issuing – entering a position that requires this type of identification. You must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or immigrant with legal status in the United States.
  • Fill out the form – once you get here, it is time to fill out the form. You have several options – in person and locally, online or by phone. It is necessary to give correct and correct information – name, date of birth, personal identification number, contacts (phone number, address and email). Feedback can be made in the most convenient way for you – by email or phone
  • Scheduling an appointment at the TWIC Card Issue Center – you can do it again by phone or by an online request. You will not be returned if you just go to the location, but that means waiting for everyone who has an appointment. It can take you quite a while, even with an attempt to arrange the exact date and time. Therefore, contact the agency as soon as you complete the application for pre-registration

In addition to the above procedure, you can also go through the online application, all remotely. The last option is to physically visit a recording center.

The second part, after arranging a meeting, includes a few more steps that you need to prepare for:

  • During the meeting, you must have at least one identification document (ID, passport, etc.). This way you will be validated before the authorities. Sometimes a slightly larger organization is required – providing two documents, including a photo ID such as a driver’s license or national ID card and birth certificate. This is the case when you do not have a passport, global entry card, green card or FAST card (free and secure trading)
  • Once you have the documents you need, go to the enrollment center as early as possible. See how many hours it opens and make sure you wait for your fingerprints and photo to take. They verify your identity
  • The third thing you need to do is pay the TWIC card fee. Usually the price is $ 125 with a validity of 5 years. You can save $ 20 if you provide a valid hazardous materials license or FAST card.
  • If you get here, you’re in the final. All you have to do is indicate how to receive the card. The publishing process takes about a month and a half and a half. You can get it the way you prefer – by mail or from the record center where you have submitted your documents.

Waiting for TSA approval

Once you have done everything you need and expect to receive the card, some complications may occur. You will be adequately checked in the database – nationally and internationally. If any crimes or past convictions are uncovered, you may have to appeal. In this case, you will receive a letter with instructions on how to file a complaint.

If your survey went smoothly, you will be notified that your card is ready. With the photo ID you will receive the card in the center (if you have not selected the mail delivery option).

Renewal or issue of a new (lost or damaged) TWIC card

As it became clear, the card is valid for a period of 5 years. You then need to complete the renewal procedure. The steps are the same as the previous ones – you need to fill in the application form again. The same documents are needed. Each eligible person will be issued a TWIC card.

The fact that you have renewed your card so far without a problem does not mean that it will be every time. What is important is what has happened in the last 5 years. There is a very long list of criminal convictions that can set you apart with a reissue. The reissue price is $ 128. Again, there is an option to reduce the $ 105 if you have a hazmat approved driver’s license.

If your card is lost and damaged (unusable through the readers), you need to renew it. Again, you will be checked for eligibility to hold a TWIC card. The fee here is lower – $60. Within about two months, you will receive your card in the way you want – locally in the center or by post.
